On Wednesday night a man unleashed gunfire at both a bowling alley and a bar, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 22 lives in the US cities of Lewiston and Maine. The suspect remained at large, prompting authorities to issue a directive for residents and business owners to stay indoors and away from the streets. Dozens of individuals were also injured.

Lewiston Police initially alerted the public via a Facebook post about an active shooter situation at Schemengees Bar and Grille and Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley located approximately 4 miles away. The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office posted two images of the suspect on their Facebook page, depicting an armed individual entering an establishment.

Central Maine Medical Center, on their website, stated that their staff was mobilising in response to a mass casualty event caused by a mass shooter. They were working in conjunction with nearby hospitals to accommodate patients. An employee in the emergency department conveyed that no further information could be disclosed and confirmed that the hospital was on lockdown.

The alert for Lewiston was issued shortly after 8 p.m., as the sheriff’s office reported that law enforcement agencies were investigating “two active shooter events.” An update was released around 10 p.m., describing the situation as a manhunt.

Governor Janet Mills released a statement. She confirmed that she had been briefed on the situation and would maintain close contact with public safety officials. The White House reported that President Joe Biden had also been briefed.

Lewiston, situated approximately 35 miles north of Portland, has become a significant hub for African immigration into Maine. The Somali population, numbering in the thousands, has transformed the demographics of the once predominantly white mill city into one of the most diverse communities in northern New England.

Ange Amores, a spokesperson for the city of Lewiston, stated that city officials would not be commenting on the shooting. She added that the Maine State Police planned to hold a news conference to provide an update to the public.
