Delhi Police have arrested a senior Delhi government official accused of raping his deceased friend’s young daughter. His wife, who gave abortion pills to the minor girl as part of the cover-up, has also been arrested. The girl was hospitalized earlier this month after suffering from an anxiety episode. She disclosed the sexual abuse and pregnancy termination after receiving counseling. The arrest came only hours after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal ordered the official’s suspension under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

In a protest, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW)) chief Swati Maliwal sat on ‘Dharna’ at the hospital in Delhi where the minor girl has been admitted, alleging that she was not allowed by the police to meet the victim and also levelled serious allegations against Delhi police for not acting on time against the accused.

Maliwal tweeted, “Why only detained? Why not arrested till now? Why is Delhi Police trying to shield the accused persons? Why is the Delhi Police not allowing me to meet the survivor? What are they trying to hide?

When the girl’s father died in 2020, the accused official offered to take her to his home to assist her and help her recover from the trauma of losing a parent, according to police officials.

Between October 2020 and February 2021, he allegedly raped the girl many times at his home. In 2021, the girl discovered she was pregnant and told the official’s wife, who advised her not to tell anyone about the abuse. She even offered the girl abortion pills.

After some time, the girl’s mother arrived at the apartment of the accused official. Due to her bad health, the girl requested to be taken home.
