India has become the 13th country in the world to issue an internationally accepted OIML certificate. It is an intergovernmental organization which was established in 1955. Domestic manufacturers will now be able to get their weighing & measuring instruments tested and sell their items in international markets.

It has 63 Member States and 64 corresponding members. India has now become an authority for issuing OIML certificates for selling weights & measures anywhere in the world. To sell a weight or measure in the international market, a pattern approval certificate is mandatory, which the Department of Consumer Affairs can issue now.

Moreover, secretary (Consumer Affairs), Rohit Kumar Singh, shared this significant achievement with the press during a conference, where a presentation and video were presented to illustrate the importance of this accomplishment.

Paul Dixon, Executive Secretary, OIML-CS, also joined from the OIML’s Paris headquarters for the briefing. He also reaffirmed India’s role as an OIML Certificates Issuing Authority and assured continued cooperation.

Moreover, India follows recommendations and procedures of testing and calibration of weights and measures.  The reports prepared by the Legal Metrology’s Regional Reference Standards Laboratories are now acceptable to the authorities. Now, India is an authority for issuing OIML pattern approval certificates and can act as a support system for indigenous manufacturers.

Benefits of OIML Certificate

Indian manufacturers can now export their weighing and measuring instruments worldwide without incurring additional testing fees, resulting in significant cost savings.

Furthermore, India can also support foreign manufacturers by issuing pattern approval certificates from the certified RRSLs.  By issuing the OIML certificates of weighing & measuring instruments to foreign manufacturers, India will also generate forex in terms of fees, etc.

As a result, India may now influence the policies and provide input to the strategy. This system allows certificates issued by issuing authorities in the member states to be accepted by other participants as the basis for issuing national or regional-type approvals for measuring instruments.

Also, the other OIML Members can thus issue national-type approval certificates without the need for expensive test facilities by relying on these certificates.

India now joins an exclusive group of nations. The group includes Australia, Switzerland, China, the Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Slovakia. India joined as the 13th country worldwide, authorized to issue OIML approval certificates.
