Gautam Buddha University secures ₹50 Cr for AI centre
Gautam Buddha University emerged as the visionary initiative of the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Ms. Mayawati.
Gautam Buddha University (GBU) in Greater Noida has received a generous grant of ₹50 crore from the Uttar Pradesh government to establish a center of excellence in artificial intelligence (AI), as per officials’ announcement on Thursday.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath made the revelation during the groundbreaking ceremony in Lucknow on Tuesday, expressing the government’s commitment to creating job opportunities for millions of youths within their localities through this initiative.
Gautam Buddha University emerged as the visionary initiative of the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Ms. Mayawati. Established under the Gautam Buddha University Act of 2002 by the Uttar Pradesh Government, the university commenced its inaugural academic session in 2008. Notably, it operates with full financial support from NOIDA and GNIDA authorities, both being undertakings of the Uttar Pradesh government. Additionally, the university holds recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India.
The ‘Destination UP-Emerging Hub for AI in India’ conclave at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan witnessed the initiation of the AI hub’s establishment. GBU, in conjunction with IIM-Lucknow, has been selected as pivotal hubs for the state’s AI initiatives, marking a significant milestone in the university’s journey of innovation and academic distinction.
At the event, three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were exchanged between the government and prominent entities such as Microsoft Corporation, HCL Software, and Wadhwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence, outlining their collaboration for the AI center’s establishment.

Prof RK Sinha, the Vice-chancellor of GBU, highlighted that the ₹50 crore grant from the UP government would be utilised for setting up the AI Centre on the university campus and recruiting experts in the field. Emphasizing the university’s existing status as one of the top 10 institutions in India offering AI in academics, he expressed the goal of leading innovation, driving research breakthroughs, and nurturing talent that will contribute to shaping the future of AI.
