Israel-Iran conflict: Is Middle East on the brink of war?

What is happening between Israel and Iran is rapidly escalating to a point of no return to the possibility of an out-and-out war capable of destabilizing Europe and Asia. The tensions further increased after the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, after which Iran ordered retaliatory strikes against Israel.

Ismail Haniyeh is one of the influential political leaders of Hamas, a Palestinian Islamist organization. He was the head of the political bureau of Hamas and the former Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority. Haniyeh is one of the most popular leaders in Gaza and within Hamas, over which Tel Aviv attaches the terrorist tag.

The conflict has escalated manifoldly after the bombing of residential areas and key Hamas assets in Gaza by the Israel Defense Forces, raising hostilities on all sides. Iran has pointed an accusing finger at Israel for perpetrating a humanitarian crisis with its attacks on schools, hospitals, and residential buildings in Gaza. In response to this, Iran has launched unprecedented attacks against Israeli territory.

This can further escalate into a bigger conflict, as Iran is likely to retaliate with its deadliest weapons. The tensions have already forced several nations, including India, to cancel flights to Tel Aviv amid the precarious situation.

Hezbollah, also Hezabulla, is a Lebanese Shiite Islamist militant organization and political party. Being an Iranian-backed organization, Hezbollah has been engaged in various wars with Israel and is considered one of the major contributors to Middle Eastern geopolitics. Their involvement might further complicate this already explosive situation.

The United States now moves military assets to the Middle East to protect Israel, with more joining in case this war escalates. It has been affirmed that Iran might attack the land of Israel again within the coming few days hence a de-escalation is of high importance.

This growing conflict occurs at a time when the world is already witnessing the war between Russia and Ukraine, hence adding strain to the world’s economy. The international community watches closely as developments unfold, hoping the issues are solved amicably to avoid further global unrest.
