The Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) intervened following the alarming reports. During an inspection, officials discovered a dead rat in one of the water tanks, heightening fears of contamination. Water samples have been collected for laboratory testing, and further action will depend on the results.

Years of Neglect Fuel Crisis

Residents have long complained about the poor maintenance of water tanks, citing past issues with foul-smelling and odd-tasting water. Despite these warnings, no significant steps were taken to address the problem. Even homes equipped with advanced RO filtration systems in this Greater Noida West society were unable to prevent the contamination, forcing families to resort to boiling water or relying on packaged drinking water.

The crisis came to light on Saturday evening when affected Greater Noida West residents began sharing their symptoms in community WhatsApp groups. A clear pattern emerged: all those who fell ill had consumed the society’s water supply. By Monday, the number of reported cases skyrocketed from 20 in two towers to over 200 across the entire complex.

Families in Distress

The situation has been particularly harrowing for families with young children. Among the affected is a three-year-old child suffering from severe stomach pain and diarrhea, underscoring the grave impact of the contamination. Panic has gripped the community as residents scramble for safe drinking water and medical assistance.

In response, the society’s maintenance team launched an emergency cleaning of the water tanks and sought help from the local health department. Medical camps have been set up within the society to treat those affected by waterborne illnesses.

GNIDA Investigates, Contamination Likely Localized

GNIDA officials have stated that the area’s main water supply is shared with other residential societies, none of which have reported similar issues. This suggests that the contamination is likely confined to Supertech Ecovillage 1. However, the incident has reignited concerns, as a similar crisis occurred last September in neighboring Supertech Ecovillage 2, where over 800 residents fell ill due to E. coli contamination in the water supply.

While immediate measures are being taken to address the crisis, residents are demanding long-term solutions to ensure safe drinking water. Many are calling for stricter regulations and regular water quality checks to prevent such incidents in the future.
