They also delved into a discourse on pertinent regional and global issues of mutual interest.

President Putin conveyed his inability to participate in the upcoming G20 Summit, slated to take place in New Delhi on September 9-10, 2023.

Putin’s Absence in Big Events

Russia will be represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. It is to be noted that Putin could not attend the recently concluded BRICs meeting in South Africa due to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

While acknowledging Russia’s decision with understanding, Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude to President Putin for Russia’s consistent and unwavering support towards all initiatives under India’s G20 presidency.

The conversation concluded on a positive note as both leaders concurred on maintaining open lines of communication. India shares a strong bond with Russia and both the countries also enjoy strong defense ties.

Lavrov’s attendance at the G20 Summit is a sign that Russia is still seeking to engage with the international community, despite its isolation following the invasion of Ukraine. However, it is also likely to be met with protests from some Western countries.

Some experts have expressed concern about Lavrov’s attendance at the G20 Summit. They feel that it will legitimize Russia’s actions in Ukraine and send the message that the international community is willing to overlook its war crimes. Others argue that it is important to keep Russia engaged in dialogue, even if it is difficult.

The G20 summit is a forum for the leaders of the world’s 20 largest economies to discuss global economic and financial issues. It is also a chance for the leaders to meet face-to-face and discuss other pressing issues.
