Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 38th National Games in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, on Tuesday, marking a significant moment for the state and the nation. Addressing a vibrant gathering, the Prime Minister highlighted the energy and potential of India’s youth, stating that Uttarakhand, a young state celebrating its 25th year of formation, is resplendent with the spirit of the National Games. The event, themed ‘Green Games,’ emphasizes environmental sustainability, with trophies and medals made from e-waste and a tree to be planted in the name of every medal winner.

He noted that India is progressing towards becoming the world’s third-largest economic power, with the sports economy playing a pivotal role. Shri Modi highlighted the growing ecosystem around sports, including coaches, trainers, nutritionists, and equipment manufacturers, pointing out that Meerut alone has over 35,000 sports equipment factories employing more than 3 lakh people.

Reflecting on the government’s efforts to promote sports, the Prime Minister mentioned that the sports budget has more than tripled in the last decade. Initiatives like the Khelo India program, TOPS scheme, and the establishment of India’s first sports university in Manipur have been instrumental in nurturing talent. He also praised the recent successes of Indian athletes in international events, including the Olympics, Paralympics, and World Championships in kho-kho and chess.
Modi expressed his vision for India to host the 2036 Olympics, emphasizing the transformative impact such an event would have on infrastructure, tourism, and employment. He also lauded Uttarakhand for becoming the first state to implement the Uniform Civil Code, linking it to the spirit of sportsmanship that promotes equality and teamwork.
The Prime Minister urged athletes to embrace the values of ‘Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat’ by learning about the diverse cultures, languages, and cuisines of India. He also called for collective efforts to promote fitness and combat obesity, encouraging citizens to adopt healthier lifestyles through the Fit India Movement.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Uttarakhand Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Gurmit Singh, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, and Union Ministers of State Ajay Tamta and Smt. Raksha Khadse, among other dignitaries. The 38th National Games promises to be a celebration of India’s sporting talent and unity, with athletes from across the nation competing to set new records and inspire future generations.
