Supreme Court refuses to cancel NEET-UG 2024
The Supreme Court dismissed calls for the cancellation of NEET-UG 2024 on Tuesday and ruled that there was not enough material to suggest examination results were compromised or that the integrity of the examination had been systematically breached.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud said while deciding petitions for the exam’s cancellation due to alleged question paper leaks, “We are of the considered view that ordering the cancellation of the entire NEET-UG 2024 examination is neither justified ..on the basis of the material on the record.”
Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra further went on to note that city-wise and centre-wise, the examination data, vis-à-vis the trend during the previous years, does not indicate a systemic leakage of the question paper tending to undermine the sanctity of the examination.
This bench turned down the demand for a re-exam, citing the serious consequences that the decision shall have on more than 2 million students who appeared for the test.
Some of these apprehensions the judges mentioned were disruption in the admission schedule to courses in medical science, cascading effects in medical education, effects on the availability of eligible medical professionals in future, and undoable loss to the marginalised students for whom seats are reserved under reservation policy.
