A dreadful mishap took place on Thursday when at least four coaches of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh train derailed in the Gonda-Mankapur area of Uttar Pradesh. The derailment of train number 15904 was reported at a spot in the yard area at 2:37 pm, as per a statement from the Railways. At least four people have lost their lives in the mishap.

The officials said the derailment may have a link to suspected sabotage efforts. The driver of the train reportedly said he definitely heard an explosion just before the train derailed. This has led to speculation on track sabotage, which Indian Railways is investigating.

Railways Ministry spokesperson Anil Saxena said after the derailment that passengers who are fit to travel will be ferried by road to Mankapur Junction, the nearest railhead to the accident site, from where special trains will take them to Dibrugarh.”.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed concern over the train accident in Gonda district. The Chief Minister has directed the officials to reach the spot promptly and expedite smooth relief operations. He has instructed that the injured are given proper medical treatment.

Because of the ongoing rescue work, senior officials of the railway and local administration are present at the site of the incident. The efforts are supported by the dispatch of one team from the National Disaster Response Force in Lucknow and another in Balrampur, which has been sent to Gonda. All the rescue operations are going on with five ambulances and orders given for sending in more ambulances as required. First aid was being administered to the injured, who were being taken to the nearby hospitals for further treatment. The relief commissioner of Uttar Pradesh said that officials had already mobilized SDRF teams in three districts to speed up the relief operations.

Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister Adityanath, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), said that it is an “extremely sad” incident. He said, “District administration officials have been directed to carry out relief and rescue operations on a war footing and to take the injured to the hospital on top priority and provide them proper treatment. I pray to Lord Shri Ram for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

The tragedy of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh train derailment again poses a big question about the security of the railways and the scope for sabotage. What Indian Railways finds by its independent examination of the cause of the derailment is a key consideration to rule out whether this is a case of sabotage. Meanwhile, the focus is set on taking all measures in the line of providing immediate support and arrangements to ensure that the onward journey of the stranded passengers is safe.

The Chandigarh-Dibrugarh train tragedy is only a reminder of stark vulnerability, animating the need for ensuring every strict form in trepidation when it comes to railway safety, to stave off such tragedies. Even as the rescue and relief operations go on, the thoughts of a concerned nation are with the victims and their kin. A responsive local administration and Railways Ministry exhibit quite a clear commitment toward the steps being taken for the best interests of the passengers in order to ensure their safety and well-being. Everybody will be awaiting the findings of the investigation to clarify and prevent future occurrences.
